It's At the Well Monday and I'm excited to be the little linky-link hostess for today's topic. That means I came up with the idea of talking about having a family vision, but that's not to mean this is my own brilliant idea.
No, you see, I went to a Family Vision Conference a few years ago, and let me tell you, it changed the way we do this thing called raisin' youngin's! After you're done reading my little take on this, click over there and see if you can't get your family to one of these conferences. A.ma.zing. Also, check around those who are also sharing their take on this as well here At the Well. Well, well, well.
Why does having a family vision matter?
Well, I've learned over the years from many people, including my pastor, that (and I might be botching this up pretty darn good) everyone ends up somewhere, but few end up somewhere on purpose. (that was close)
Meaning, unless we set a vision before our family on all levels, we might not end up where we thought we should. We can have ideas and dreams for what our family and our kids might look like 5, 10, 20 years down the road, but without defining those vision in concrete and purposeful ways, we'll probably not look much like what we dream.
Proverbs 29:18 (in the good ol' King James Version) says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish..."
A vision for your marriage and family will be a gift of life giving proportions. And hey, any of you who are single don't think for one minute this isn't for you. You too need vision for your life. If you marry you'll need it. If you don't you'll need it because, like all of us, we can have "spiritual children" to mentor and raise in Christ Jesus. You can have vision for those you minister to.
I'm sure you're all wanting to know, "Well, what's the Witcher's vision?" I'm glad you asked.
The theme in our house is "Kingdom Minded." We have it hung on our wall on the way down the hallway. There is not a day that goes by that all of us read that plaque and are reminded of why we're here. It's not just for us, but for the world.
But more than that, we have defined what we want our girls so strive after, what character traits we want to really develop in them, and how we will raise them to have a Kingdom Minded thought process for just about everything. It's a work in progress, but, uh, we're working on it.
Pastor JT and I are very purposeful about raising our kids to think beyond their little world of Disney and Webkins. We even choose curriculum (because we're homeschoolers) that teach with a missions slant. We try to keep our girls thinking about other cultures and we remind them often to be praying about the great things God will have them do.
Our vision goes deeper than that and has many practical facets. I won't go into those here, but I wanted to encourage you reading this really take a look at your life and your family's life and consider building and casting a vision for your family.
What do you value?
What do you honor?
What do you want your kids to value?
What character traits do you want to develop in both you and the rest of your family?
And don't think that because you're kids are grown that you can't still do this. Make a vision for you and your spouse or your future grandkids. Develop a vision for ministry and outreach. Find something you love doing and write down how you can be an effective minster to those around you.
Another example of having vision comes from my dear friend, Shawna. Here's a bit from her and her hubs vision over their family:
Mirrors Reflecting God's Glory
2 Cor. 3:18
Yours will look totally different than mine and Shawna's because God will have a different call on your family's life.
Seriously, go to that conference. If you can't, take time to sit with your spouse, or by yourself, and try to write down then things you'd like to see your family do, become, and be examples for in this world.
Honestly folks, I don't want to see a bunch of dead families lyin' around.
Cast vision! Cast life!
Thanks to Chelsey at Joyfully Living for being our Super Hostess and coming up with this!!For those of you participating heeeeree's Mr.Linkyyyyyy!

Wow - what an awesome post! We have a family statement of belief. But I don't think we ever came up with a vision statement for our family. I've been talking to my hubby about it and I think we're going to come up with something more official before I do my post.
Thanks for sharing!

proverbs 29:18 is one of my favorite verses. i even came to a point in my life where i could not think, move or decide without a clear vision from the Lord. through this verse, i learned to wait patiently. i am so blessed that He never failed to give us the direction that we need as a family. please pray for us as we plan and take steps of faith towards planting a mission work in Japan 2-3 years from now. the Kingdom is near! thanks for hosting and sharing your valuable lessons on family and life with a vision. this is close to my heart.:$ shalom!
Colored heart! I'm so glad you are following the call to GO! I'm praying for you right now!
"To see each successive generation of every family live more fully for God.
God wants every family to experience the peace that comes from the harmony He provides when we know His purpose and are fulfilling it within our families."
I copied this vision from the Family Vision you suggested. I really like this. This discussion has really got my mind and my heart going because, as a family, we haven't ever really sit down what our vision is other than surviving pay-check-to-pay-check. I hope to learn alot from this week's discussion. Thank you for hosting this.

Deborah, I'm so excited for you and your family! You will find great joy from casting vision and living it out!
Nat,
You've blessed my heart today! I LOVE family vision talk! Setting visions, goals and priorities has been the very glue that has held us together at times. Thanks for bringing this topic to the Well today - awesome girl! :)
LOVE LOVE LOVE the family vision conference, wasn't it amazing when you started (or you husband actually) writing your vision. How it just flowed. It is such great accountability for us in making decisions, does this go with our vision? Our we working towards God purpose for us?
I just got ours printed, it is long but we love IT.
I might just post it today!
What a great post! Steve and I have an empty nest now, but I wish I had seen this back in the day. Of course, he doesn't know it, but we're going to start developing a family vision for the two of us and for grandparenting. Thanks for an awesomely encouraging post!
Great post! Keep preachin' it, girl!
"At the Well" is never a dry place. Always something there to keep me depending on God, and your post today proved that further. Thank you for causing me to examine this and start a healthy conversation with my husband. I know he is the most grateful of all.
Thank you all for coming! I hope that you all get a supercharged vision from God!!
Wow! I planned to gather "At the Well" this morning for my first dip. :-) However, I must ponder this before I link a meaningful post. I know in my heart what our vision is, but how wonderful it will be to actually define it in print!
I didn't mention this in my post today, but family vision, as you said, is important to contemplate *before* marriage. We are trying to get this through to our own children right now as they seek God's will for their future mates. Do you see the one you are courting being a key player in fulfilling what you think your family should look like twenty years into your marriage? A good thing to think long and hard about.
Great point Marcia!
First-timer here! I've been lurking At the Well, but this is my first time jumping in. [I think I just jumped analogies - maybe I'm not At the Well but At the Pool. :-)]
As I wrote, I kept feeling like the topic of family vision could be a series, but what a good excercise to succintly type it out in one shot. My husband and I review our vision and goals periodically, but I don't believe we've ever laid it all out in such a manner to put on display.
Thanks for hosting, Natalie!
Hello sister Natalie!
Thank you so much for starting this topic today! It's wonderful!
I've written about it on my blog and shared our families vision as well.
One thing we do here to fulfill our families vision is try to (age appropriate) include our children with what we are doing as a family.
For example, my blog. My oldest son (sophomore in HS) edits all my posts with me! He loves it and feels so honored that I need him and respect his opinion on writing. He's a writer too, so this is one of the ways we encourage him to have confidence and experience in one of the gifts and passions God has given him. :-)
Thanks again Natalie for getting us jump started!
Bless you dear sister!
Sunny
Awesome - you just gave me something to ponder this fine day. Thank you!
Great discussion about family vision. How can we have vision if we don't know where we are going? Thanks for sharing with us today and stirring up the vision that is in each of us.
Blessings, Laurie
Natalie, this was a great topic!!! I haven't been to a vision conference, but sounds AWESOME! We went to "A Weekend to remember" last fall, and were so blessed!
I had to ponder awhile.....got the topic last night and wanted to think on it a bit. I felt a "pang" of conviction!!! I know the Lord is calling me to get serious in casting vision in all areas of my life right now. Great "challenge!"
BTW~ loved your videos on the blog! Entertaining!!!
Blessings!
Great encouragement!! I needed to remember the vision and re-read it so I could keep runnin'! Thanks!
Sheila
"Honestly folks, I don't want to see a bunch of dead families lyin' around."
You are so funny! :) It's clear we don't have vision when we're constantly getting blind-sided.
Nat, I love your heart & man your family rocks! Would love to spend some time w/ y'all Witcher's...super fun, the glimpses I've seen. Thank you for your heart to do what God has called you to.
I have been reading the At the Well posts for a while and have finally decided to jump on board. I'm starting from the beginning and catching up! It's so nice to be participating as well as reading what others are saying!
