Stories

I realize that telling stories in talks, or preaching, or whatev, is valuable. Give me your reasons why you like to hear personal stories from the people you hear from.

Do you prefer funny?

Tear-jerkers?

Normal stuff?

Out of the ordinary?

Do tell....

I have been studying this for years and have based much of my marketing and advertising on story-telling skills. We humans make all decisions emotionally, not intelectually. We use intellect to back up the decisions we make.

I love stories in a sermon, talk, teaching, whatever. I think because it helps me relate to the lesson at hand. I probably go more for the humor side of things but tear-jerker, life-lesson kind of stories really get to me too. I use them when I teach because I feel that people can connect to what is going on in the lesson.

I think any point illustrated with a relevant story is more likely to be remembered. Children also like reasons, so sometimes its easier to explain reasons with a story.Making a point more personal is more memorable too. Whatever works, and stories do, since pre-history times. Look at the Old Testament!

You know, what I love about a good story is that one can always relate to the heart of the storyteller! When you can cry with a stranger, you know you've shared something real and tangible...even from another country. ;)

Great question!
